Ugandans Surprised: Kenya Has 23 Cabinet Secretaries, Uganda 82 Ministers

Kenya’s recent political upheaval, where President William Ruto dismissed his entire cabinet, became an eye-opening moment for neighboring Uganda. Ugandans, already familiar with political volatility, were struck by the scale of Kenya’s protests and their consequential political shake-up. The dismissal of Kenya’s cabinet ministers, except for Deputy President Rigathi and Prime CS Mudavadi, left many in awe.

Comparisons quickly surfaced, highlighting Kenya’s leaner 23-minister cabinet against Uganda’s staggering number of over 80 ministers. This contrast sparked humorous reactions among Ugandans, with some jokingly offering to “donate” ministers to Kenya. President Yoweri Museveni’s government, known for its top-heavy structure, includes 32 Cabinet Ministers and 50 Ministers of State, making a total of 82.

The realization fueled discussions about government efficiency and accountability in Uganda, coinciding with plans for protests under the #OccupyKampala banner. This movement aims to address corruption allegations and recent controversial sentencing cases, including that of Edward Awebwa, a young man imprisoned for criticizing the first family.

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine criticized the sentencing, contrasting it with perceived leniency towards corrupt officials. The solidarity shown by Kenyans, who expressed support for Uganda’s protests, reflects regional concerns about governance and accountability across East Africa.
