Tragic Escape Attempt: Inmate Fatally Shot at Fort Portal Prison

A desperate bid for freedom ended in tragedy at Fort Portal Main Prison in Uganda. Ronald Turyamureeba, a convicted rapist, attempted to escape by jumping over the prison fence but was shot by sentries and later succumbed to his wounds.

According to Uganda Prison spokesperson Frank Baine, Turyamureeba tried to take advantage of the festive season to make his escape. However, the prison guards were vigilant and responded swiftly to prevent the breakout.

This incident is not an isolated one. Baine revealed that there were three other prison escape attempts during the festive season, in Dokolo, Iganga, and Murchison Bay at Luzira. Fortunately, all the inmates involved in these attempts were captured.

Despite these incidents, Baine described the festive season as “largely peaceful,” with a minimal increase of 50 inmates. The current prison population stands at 78,824, comprising 40,805 convicts, 37,474 on remand, and 545 debtors. The prison staffing levels remain at 14,000..

With the festive season coming to a close, prison visits have resumed, allowing families and friends to reconnect with their loved ones behind bars.
