Police have approved 2,900 places for fireworks shows to celebrate the new year. This is a big jump from the 2,000 places allowed for the 2024 celebrations. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke announced the approval, emphasizing that all venues must adhere to strict guidelines to ensure safety. Those who fail to comply will face serious penalties.
Guidelines for Fireworks Displays
Rusoke outlined several key rules for the fireworks displays. One main requirement is that the events must be advertised in both electronic and print media. This includes local FM radio stations and newspapers. Advertisements should be on important pages, like pages 1, 2, 3, or 4. They need to be big and easy to see.
The fireworks materials must not exceed a 1.5mm caliber, and the show itself will be limited to five minutes from the first blast. Counter Terrorism (CT) police will escort and supervise the transport of fireworks. They will work with local District Police Commanders (DPCs) to ensure security and public safety during the display.
Safety Measures and Inspections
Any unused fireworks materials must be handled by an individual with an explosives blaster license (fireworks license). Additionally, Counter Terrorism Police and local DPCs will inspect each venue beforehand to ensure it meets safety standards.
Rusoke stressed that any venue not following these guidelines might have to cancel the fireworks display. This could happen before or during the event. Additional enforcement actions may be taken if necessary.
Guidelines for Music Events
Police have also set specific rules for music event organizers. No event may be held without prior approval from the Inspector General of Police. Organizers must collaborate with district security, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure a secure event.
Venues hosting music events must meet safety requirements, including emergency exits, assembly points, and firefighting equipment. Overcrowding is strictly prohibited, and flammable materials at public gatherings are discouraged.
The police want to make sure everyone has a safe and fun celebration as the new year comes.
