Makerere University Lecturer Found Dead, Body Floating On Lake Victoria

Jinja Road Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the demise of a lecturer from Makerere University, whose body was discovered floating in Lake Victoria.

SSP Patrick Onyango, the public relations officer of Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), has identified the deceased as Julius Mugaga.

Mugaga, a 32-year-old lecturer residing in Kasubi, Mengo, Lubaga division, Kampala, was reported to have met his untimely end on May 16 at 12:33 A.M., according to Onyango. The exact time and location of the incident remain unknown.

“On Thursday, May 16, 2024, police received information that fishermen had spotted a body floating along the shores of Lake Victoria at Senene Island,” Onyango stated.

An eyewitness account revealed that Mugaga’s body was found floating face up. Subsequently, the police, alerted via a WhatsApp group in Luzira, promptly responded to the scene and documented the incident.

Statements were recorded from pertinent witnesses, and the deceased’s body was retrieved from Senene Island by a team of casual experts and transported to Port Bell for easier access before being taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examination.

Patrick Onyango outlined the police’s discoveries as follows:

  • Aquos’ mobile phone was recovered at the scene, along with a bank deposit slip from Equity Bank dated May 13 under the name of Julius Mugaga, and a pair of rubber blue sandals found near the body on the shores.
  • The body, dressed in a dark and light blue t-shirt and assorted color shorts, was in an advanced state of decomposition.
  • Identification of the deceased’s relatives was facilitated through missed calls on his phone, and Alex Ssebufu, a biological brother, confirmed the deceased’s identity as Mugaga.
  • A report of disappearance had been filed at Kawala Police station. Investigations into the matter are ongoing, as stated by Patrick Onyango.
