Police Arrest Suspect in Number Plate Theft Scheme, Recover More Than 30 Plates

Police in Kajjansi Division have arrested Mumbere Brian, also known as Natamba, the prime suspect behind a wave of motor vehicle number plate thefts in the area.

The arrest is a major step in addressing the growing concerns among local motorists who have been victims of such crimes. In January 2025, Mumbere’s capture led to a targeted operation involving intelligence gathering in areas like Zana, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.

During the operation, police found 16 stolen number plates that Mumbere is believed to have hidden. He reportedly used these plates to extort money from victims seeking to recover their property. Further investigations revealed that Mumbere had hidden additional stolen plates in various locations inside and outside Kajjansi.

On January 4, 2025, a joint operation between the Kajjansi and Nateete Divisions uncovered 15 more stolen number plates from areas like Kisigula, Katale, Bunamwaya, and Ngobe.

In total, the suspect is believed to have stolen more than 30 number plates within a month. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, emphasized the importance of this recovery, noting that number plate theft can lead to serious issues such as identity theft and other forms of criminal misuse.

Mumbere’s method involved stealing the plates, hiding them, and then contacting victims with a demand for payment in exchange for their return. This practice has become more common and is a growing concern as it presents risks for vehicle owners and the public.

Police are urging motorists to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. The recovered plates are being stored as evidence, and authorities are working to ensure they are returned to their rightful owners.

This successful operation underscores the police’s ongoing commitment to combating such crimes and ensuring the safety of vehicle owners in Kajjansi and surrounding areas.
