On 10th May 2024, the National population and Housing census began a countrywide census. According to the results released last week at Kampala Serena Hotel by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, stated that Ugandans are Forty five million nine hundred five thousand four hundred seventeen (45,905,417) persons, of whom male persons are twenty four million three hundred thirty eight thousand six hundred eighty one persons ( 24,338,681) representing a growth rate of 2.9.
According to the executive director of Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Chris Mukiiza, the process was very successful despite of minor challenges. “I want to thank Ugandans for actively participating in the recently concluded Census. As an organization responsible for the collection of national data, we faced challenges but we were able to disseminate the Census results as per the roadmap that we published” he said. The report says that a bigger number of children attend primary school representing 66.8% but few proceed to secondary school. Statistics show that only 22.3% attend secondary school which is a big number. It continues to state that access to an improved water source is improving steadily and stands at 81%. Solid waste disposal has also improved as per the 2024 report in every 100. Close to 48 people do not save money. The report also continued to confirm that 89.4% of the parishes in Uganda have at least a primary school and these are mostly founded by government and private entities 70.8% of the sub counties have a secondary school where 62.2% are government founded and 54.5% are privately owned. Giving his remarks, a concerned Ugandan, Bwambare Solomon, says that Acholi, Bagisu and Bakonzo figures need to be reviewed. That Bakonjo and Basoga over produced and are leading in early pregnancies and large numbers per family. Bakonzo can’t be that small figure.” he said. However, the report showed that 74% of the people in Uganda can read and write. Children between 6-12 years that are out of school are mostly in Karamoja districts at 74.2%, followed by West Nile at 32.2%. In term of religious affiliation, Christians form the biggest number of the population, 8 out of the 10 Ugandans are Christians. Catholic form the larger percentage at 37.4% followed by Anglicans at 30.0%. Pentecostals have increased to 14. 7% from 11.1% and over 13% are Muslims among others.
Children between 0-17 years form the largest of the population standing at 50%, followed by the youth between 18 to 30 years at 23.5% while older persons make 5% of the total population. Total number of households in Uganda total to ten million six hundred ninety eight thousand nine hundred thirteen (10,698,913). The population for Uganda may 2024 based in the National population Census 2024 stands at 45,995,417 persons with the male population recorded at 24,338,681 persons. The growth rate is 2.9.
Giving her remarks, the Prime Minister, thanked Uganda Bureau of Statistics and it’s partners for successfully completing the task. She promised on behalf of government to continue supporting the Bureau as they do their job. “These Census results will serve as a cornerstone for national and local planning partners. Congratulations to UBOS on conducting a successful exercise” she said. Some people believe that the enumerators were given little time so the results should be reviewed. However the Executive Director said that what was released by the Prime Minister was the official number and the next exercise will be conducted in 2034. Mr Mukiiza thanked the government for the support and other development partners.
